Queen's Ball Details

For over 20 years, the Queens Ball has been the time for Tasmania to dress up and boogie down! Overview

Queens Ball Costume Competition

In 2010, we're aiming to make the costume competition even bigger than 2009, with over $500 in cash prizes. Don't get literally SPACED-OUT over the theme, be inspired... The astronaut, aliens, cyborg, Captain Janeway, Spock, the Jetsons, Mork and Mindy, Futurama, Lost in Space, Neil Armstrong...the list of possibilities goes on – you are only limited by the bounds of your imagination and creativity. Don’t miss this chance to get SPACED-OUT!

Competition Guidelines

Entrants in the costume competition must register between 10pm and midnight. All entrants must be Queens Ball ticket holders. There is no entry fee. Entrants need to complete an entry form, have their picture taken, and be issued with a number to wear for the duration of the event. Entrants will be required to assemble near the stage ten minutes before the costume parade.

During the competition, entrants will parade in numerical order for the judges and audience. Judges will be looking for five qualities: Creativity, Delivery, Personality, Imagination, and best interpretation of the Theme. There will be prizes awarded by the judges based on their deliberations, and an audience award based on applause. Prize decisions are final and no correspondence will be entered into.

Space Theme

Need some ideas for a costume? We’re flat our trying to dress up the venue, but we did take a few minutes to Google some websites that we think will help you pull something magnificent together. And remember not to hold back. This costume stuff is a serious competition and if you want to take home the cash prizes you have to be creative, entertaining, full of personality and imagination, and maybe even a little bit innovative in your costume creation.

To find out what space costumes might be, how to dress up as an astronaut and what gravity-defying things you can wear, float through some of these:

Queens Ball FAQs

Why should I dress up?

Dressing up is part of the tradition of the Queens Ball. More than half of the people attending will be dressed in some of the most magnificent costumes Hobart has ever seen, so you won't be alone. Plus, there is a costume competition with cash prizes up for grabs! (See the column to the left for more details.)

Will there be a cloak room?

Yes. The cloak room will be available between the hours of 9pm and 5am. The cost to cloak your items will be $2. All proceeds go to the Tasmanian Gay and Lesbian Rights Group.

Will tickets be available at the door?

Yes, provided they haven't sold our beforehand. Tickets at the door will be priced at $30 full price/25 concession/$20 GLC members. If you still have time, we recommend you pre-purchase and pick up your tickets at the ticket outlets. They are $5 cheaper and you will get in the venue faster if you have your tickets on hand.

Can I pick up my pre-purchased tickets at the venue?

Yes. But please bear in mind, you will still need to queue to pick up your tickets. TasPride and venue staff will attempt to get you to the ticket pick-up point as fast as possible. We recommend picking up your tickets from Centertainment in Elizabeth Mall, Hobart before 2pm on Saturday, so you can go straight through security when you arrive on the night.

Is there an ATM at the venue?

Yes. The ATM is located inside the venue, so if you're buying tickets at the door, make sure you have your cash on you when you arrive.

Will there be food available?

There will not be food available inside the venue. Please make sure you've eaten adequately before turning up at the venue. Dancing all night is hard work!

When do doors officially close?

Venue doors will close at 3am. This is also the cut-off time to purchase tickets. Once you leave the venue after 3am, you will not be allowed back in.

Do I need to bring my membership or concession card for a discount?

Yes. Just put it together with your ID, you have to bring that anyway. We love all of our members dearly, but with so many different staff and volunteers working the door, it is impossible for us all to remember your names and faces. A membership list will not be kept at the door, for the simple reason that it will slow down your getting into the venue, and we want you to get inside and have the night of your life. If you don't have your membership or concession card, you will be charged full price.

What concession cards do you accept?

Concession includes student, government concession and seniors cards.
